Making Conversation

Why did people naturally assume that the sun moves around the earth, rather than that the earth is actually rotating ?

Well ! ... obviously because it just looks like the                                  Sun is going around the Earth.

Hmm! ... What then would it have looked like, if it had looked as though the Earth was actually rotating ??

Doodling whilst waiting for his plane, Mr. me had his head for company... (yawn)

if earth was rotating but not revolving, and the sun was going around the earth, then what it would look like.. would depend on the direction of revolution of sun compared to direction of rotation of earth. if both were in same direction we may have had longer spans of sunshine (days) and darkness (night). if they moved in the opp direction, then we could have had shorter days n nights.
OR, you could just see the movements of moon.. THAT goes around the earth, and that is probably what the movement of sun would be like.

(refer to lunar days and lunar nights)
hope this helps.

Not that you aren't wrong (and hey ... anyone can google)
Think harder about the irony here.
Also, in your case things would've 'looked' the same! Maybe the same for longer or shorter hours.
In being wrong, we are so confident and righteous about our invented models, and so fearful of being incorrect so as to render the truth as blasphemous. Galileo did have the last laugh. Again ... the irony is where it's at!
